Metabolic Flexibility: Why Your Body Forgot How to Switch Fuel Sources (and How to Retrain It)

If you crash between meals, crave carbs, depend on caffeine, or feel like your body suddenly forgot how to burn fat after 40…there may be more going on than calories.


It should be able to use glucose (sugar) when it's available and shift toward using stored fat when it needs to.

Back and forth.

Sugar → fat → sugar → fat.

Your body should be able to make that switch based on what you've eaten, how active you are, and what your body needs for energy.

That ability is called metabolic flexibility.

And when you lose it?

Everything can start feeling harder than it should.


What Is Metabolic Flexibility?

Metabolic flexibility is simply your body's ability to use the right fuel at the right time.

When things are working well:

→ You eat a meal and efficiently use glucose for energy.

→ Between meals, your body can rely more heavily on stored fat.

→ During lower-intensity movement, fat can provide a larger share of your energy.

→ During higher-intensity exercise, your body can quickly use more glucose.

→ Overnight, your body can comfortably get through hours without needing another meal.


Your metabolism isn't supposed to be stuck using one fuel source.

It's supposed to be able to switch.

And when it can?

You may notice:

✓ More stable energy

✓ Fewer cravings

✓ Less need to snack constantly

✓ Better exercise endurance and recovery

✓ More stable blood sugar

✓ Better body-composition response

✓ Less of that dreaded afternoon crash


What Metabolic Inflexibility Can Feel Like


You're probably never going to open a lab report and see:

“METABOLICALLY INFLEXIBLE.”

Wouldn't that make things easier? 😂

Instead, your body gives you clues.


See if any of these sound familiar:

☐ You need to eat every few hours or you feel terrible.

☐ You get shaky, foggy, irritable, or “hangry” when a meal is delayed.

☐ You crave sugar or carbohydrates—especially later in the day.

☐ You depend on caffeine to make it through the afternoon.

☐ You experience an energy crash around 2–4 PM.

☐ You feel “wired but tired.”

☐ You wake up hungry or feel like you need food immediately.

☐ Your workouts leave you exhausted instead of energized.

☐ You're exercising and eating pretty well…but your body composition isn't changing.

☐ Belly fat seems to have appeared out of nowhere—especially during perimenopause.


If you're checking multiple boxes, your metabolism may be struggling to move smoothly between fuel sources.

You have plenty of stored energy available.

The problem may be that your body isn't accessing it efficiently.


So…How Did Your Metabolism Get Here?


This usually doesn't happen overnight.

It builds slowly.

And for women in their 40s and 50s, there is rarely one single cause.

It's usually a pileup.


1. Chronic Stress

Your body doesn't know the difference between:

  • Running from a tiger

  • A stressful meeting

  • Caring for everyone else

  • Working until 10 PM

  • Constant notifications

  • Financial stress

  • Sleeping five hours

  • Living in go-go-go mode

Stress hormones help make glucose available because your body thinks you need energy right now.

That's helpful during an emergency.

It's not so helpful when your body thinks every Tuesday is an emergency.

Chronic stress can make blood-sugar regulation and metabolic flexibility much harder.


2. Constant Eating and Processed Carbohydrates

Breakfast.

Snack.

Coffee drink.

Lunch.

Snack.

Something while making dinner.

Dinner.

Something sweet afterward.

If you're eating from the minute you wake up until the minute you go to bed, your body rarely gets much of a break from incoming fuel.

This does not mean you need to starve yourself or start an extreme fasting plan.

It means your body may benefit from learning that it doesn't need food every two hours.

Sometimes we need to stop constantly adding fuel so the body has an opportunity to use what it already has.


3. Loss of Muscle

This one is HUGE—especially for women over 40.

Muscle isn't just about looking toned.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue and an important place for your body to put glucose.

More healthy muscle generally means:

→ Better glucose disposal

→ Better insulin sensitivity

→ Better metabolic health

→ More strength as you age

→ Better body composition

This is one reason I am such a fan of resistance training and adequate protein during perimenopause and menopause.

We don't want to simply lose weight.

We want to protect—and ideally build—muscle.


4. Hormone Changes

And then perimenopause walks into the room. 👋

Estrogen doesn't only affect periods and hot flashes.

Changes in estrogen during the menopause transition can also affect:

  • Insulin sensitivity

  • Body-fat distribution

  • Muscle

  • Sleep

  • Appetite

  • Cardiovascular health

That's one reason a woman can suddenly say:

“I'm eating the same way I always have, but my body is completely different.”

She's not imagining it.

The metabolic environment has changed.

And that means the strategy may need to change too.


5. Poor Sleep

We cannot talk about metabolism without talking about sleep.

Poor sleep can affect:

→ Insulin sensitivity

→ Hunger and fullness signals

→ Food choices

→ Cortisol

→ Recovery

→ Exercise performance

→ Cravings

You can have the world's prettiest supplement cabinet…

but if you're sleeping five hours a night, we have to talk about sleep.


How Do You Know If Your Metabolism Is Struggling?

This is where I love using labs.

Because instead of guessing, we can actually start connecting the dots.

A fasting glucose alone doesn't tell me enough.

Someone can have a “normal” fasting glucose while their body is producing a LOT of insulin behind the scenes to keep that glucose normal.


Some of the markers I may look at include:

Fasting glucose

Shows us your blood sugar at that moment.

Fasting insulin

Helps us see how hard your pancreas may be working to maintain that glucose.

Hemoglobin A1C

Gives us information about your average blood-sugar exposure over the past several months.

Triglycerides + HDL

The relationship between these markers can give us another clue about metabolic health.

Liver enzymes

AST, ALT, and GGT can provide information about liver health and metabolic stress.

Inflammatory markers

Markers such as hs-CRP can help us understand whether inflammation may be part of the picture.

Thyroid markers

Because your thyroid and metabolism are absolutely connected.

And depending on the person, I may also look at hormones, nutrient status, iron, vitamin D, magnesium, and other markers.


This is the important part:

One lab value doesn't tell the story.

It's the PATTERN that matters.


A Continuous Glucose Monitor Can Add Another Piece

For some people, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) can be incredibly helpful.

Instead of seeing one glucose number from one morning at the lab, we can see how your glucose responds throughout your actual life.

You may learn:

→ Which meals cause bigger glucose spikes

→ Whether glucose stays elevated longer than expected

→ How sleep affects your glucose

→ What stress does to your blood sugar

→ How a 10-minute walk after dinner changes your response

→ How your body responds to exercise

And sometimes the foods you thought were the problem aren't actually the biggest problem.

Data takes us out of guessing mode.


How Do You Rebuild Metabolic Flexibility?

Here's the good news:

Your metabolism isn't “broken.”

It can adapt.

But we're not going to fix years of metabolic dysfunction with another 30-day challenge.

We rebuild it by consistently giving your body the signals it needs.


1. Build Muscle

If you're over 40 and you're not strength training, this is one of the first places I'd start.

You don't need to become a bodybuilder.

But your muscles need a reason to stay.

Aim for regular resistance training that progressively challenges you.

Muscle is one of your best tools for healthy aging AND metabolic health.


2. Get Enough Protein

Protein helps support:

  • Muscle maintenance

  • Recovery

  • Satiety

  • Blood-sugar stability

  • Healthy aging

Instead of saving all your protein for dinner, spread it throughout your day.

For many women, aiming for roughly 30+ grams of protein per meal can be a helpful starting point, although individual needs vary.


3. Stop Eating Naked Carbs

One of my favorite simple rules:

Don't eat your carbs naked. 😉

Instead of eating carbohydrates by themselves, pair them with protein, healthy fat, and/or fiber.

Instead of:

Apple

Try:

Apple + almond butter

Instead of:

Crackers

Try:

Crackers + turkey + avocado

Instead of:

Toast

Try:

Eggs + avocado + toast

You don't necessarily need to eliminate carbohydrates.

We want your body to handle them better.


4. Give Your Body Some Space Between Meals

You don't automatically need a 16-, 18-, or 20-hour fast.

For many women, simply stopping the constant grazing is a great place to begin.

Eat a balanced meal.

Get enough protein.

Let yourself digest.

Then eat again when you're actually hungry.

Your body needs opportunities to access stored fuel.


5. Walk After Meals

This might be one of the most underrated metabolic tools available.

And it's free.

A 10–15 minute walk after a meal can help your muscles use circulating glucose.

Nothing fancy.

No gym required.

Just move.


6. Add Zone 2 Cardio

Zone 2 is lower-to-moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise.

Think:

  • Brisk walking

  • Incline treadmill

  • Cycling

  • Elliptical

  • Hiking

You should be working—but still able to carry on a conversation.

This type of training helps improve mitochondrial function and your body's ability to use fat during lower-intensity activity.

A reasonable goal for many people is 30–45 minutes a few times per week, adjusted for fitness level and medical history.


7. Protect Your Sleep

Sleep is part of your metabolic plan.

Not a bonus.

Not something you'll work on “when life slows down.”

Part. Of. The. Plan.

Aim for consistent sleep and wake times and enough sleep to wake feeling restored.

Because when sleep falls apart, blood sugar, hunger, cravings, recovery, and stress regulation often follow.


8. Lower the Constant Stress Signal

No, I'm not going to tell you to meditate for an hour every morning. 😂

Start small.

→ Walk outside

→ Get morning sunlight

→ Take five slow breaths before meals

→ Stop answering work emails at 10 PM

→ Put your phone down

→ Spend time with people who make you laugh

→ Create actual boundaries

Your nervous system is part of your metabolism too.


Why Metabolic Flexibility Matters More Than Another Diet


This is why I don't want women spending the rest of their lives jumping from diet to diet.

Keto.

Low fat.

Intermittent fasting.

1200 calories.

No carbs.

More cardio.

And then wondering why nothing works anymore.

The goal isn't to become better at dieting.

The goal is to build a body that can efficiently use energy.

If you're trying to lose fat, your body needs to be able to access stored fuel.

If you're trying to optimize your hormones, insulin sensitivity matters.

If you're thinking about a GLP-1, metabolic health matters.

If you're thinking about healthy aging, muscle and metabolic health matter.

If you want energy that lasts all day…

metabolic flexibility matters.
